A JEWEL SET IN WROUGHT IRON

Cairo, Illinois enjoyed a properous era after the Civil War. When the wealthy needed a final resting place, they looked to higher ground north of the city in Pulaski County, Illinois.

 

LOCAL STONE AND MARBLE

The earliest stone markers utilized
local sandstone or limestone. By the middle of the nineteenth century, marble arrived and practically eliminated the use of local stone.

 

THE CEMETERY ENUMERATOR

Carol Crisp searches the countryside for abandoned burial grounds and cemeteries. Her work focuses on Pope County, Illinois where she has discovered and recorded hundreds of graves.
